Certainty in the time of uncertainty
I have never realized how important certainty is to life. I admit I have always taken it for granted. No matter what changes we go through in our life we always face uncertainty to some degree. Some changes are positive and others are negative. They produce a feeling of anxiety, unease, discomfort, and uncertainty- a lack of control. But we have never experienced uncertainty so deeply on a collective level as we are feeling it now during this pandemic. COVID-19 has disrupted life across the planet. The effects are felt globally. It is a shared reality, an experience of uncertainty that we are facing collectively as a global community. We are no longer separated but interconnected with each other. Our choices and freedom impact each other's life and threaten their wellbeing.
This lack of control and threat to humanity has shifted our behavior whether we are mindful of it or not.
Some of us have taken the new initiative, become more helpful than ever, some become numb to this new reality and become static, some have become distant and shut down and some will become rebellious and destructive. Uncertainty, disempower us and leave us as a silent helpless witness until we see the reality unfold before our eyes.
These turbulent times demand witnessing, self-reflection, silence, and observation. It produces a feeling of hopelessness, disappointment, disengagement emotionally, and fear. Human behavior varies greatly in the time of uncertainty. Some are paralyzed by fear because they are realizing they have no longer control over world affairs such as; businesses and economies. It is indeed fearful. But not to those who have certainty(conviction) in this time of uncertainty. When our external world is falling apart we need to rely on our internal world and discover our spiritual strength to survive and thrive.
During the time of heath, social and economic crisis many people turn to God, higher power, or spirituality to overcome uncertainty and immortality of life. To seek answers and find peace of mind and soul. We can either choose to live in fear and give up or choose never to give up struggling in this time of uncertainty. When humanity is under attack conviction of the soul gives the courage to face the challenges of life and be prepared for what lies ahead. The unavoidable reality is that nothing on the external plane lasts forever. Therefore, we question what is lasting and what is purposeful existence.
One thing is clear both certainty and uncertainty play a critical role in our life so we can discover and recognize our own inner strengths, weakness, and purpose in our life.
How are we supposed to respond and react to this new reality and uncertainty? How are we going to define ourselves? Will we be constructive, kind, helpful, compassionate, selfless or selfish, destructive, intolerant, and impatient in the time of crisis. Would you be productive or paralyzed with fear. People who define themselves are not fearful of crises and chaos. They discover hidden opportunities and refuse to become victim of circumstances.
