Spiritual Coaching and Healing
“My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that, and I intend to end up there.”
― Mawlana Jalal-al-Din Rumi
Spiritual coaching is a holistic approach to personal development that integrates spiritual principles with coaching techniques. It recognizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, emphasizing the importance of aligning these elements to achieve a harmonious and fulfilling life. The primary goal is to help individuals tap into their inner wisdom, connect with their spiritual essence, and live authentically.
Being aware of yourself on a deeper level, connecting with the true self, to be able to experience the world with greater consciousness. Integrate meaning and purpose of life into mundane activities to avoid desperation, relying on a higher power when confronted with difficult life situations.
Spiritual coaching is about “ cultivating awareness of self”. There are many different levels of awareness such as Social, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physical awareness.
What does Spiritual awareness mean?
- Being aware of yourself on a deeper level
- Connecting with the true self NOT the egoistic self
- Knowing oneself ( Being aware of hidden biases or prejudice)
- To be able to experience the world with greater consciousness.
- Integrating meaning and purpose of life into mundane activities
- Relying on a higher power when confronted with difficult life situations and trials.
According to Freud’s personality theory, the psyche is structured into three parts;
Sigmund Freud divided human consciousness into three levels of awareness: the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. Each of these levels corresponds and overlaps with his ideas of the id, ego, and superego.
1) conscious: The conscious consists of what someone is aware of at any particular point in time, here and now- If you are aware of it then it is in the conscious mind.
2) The Preconscious: The preconscious contains information that you are NOT aware of but it is there below the surface. It can be retrieved and usually can be thought of as memory or recollection.
3) The unconscious or Subconscious mind; Hidden thoughts, memories, and desires that are buried deep in ourselves due to negative experiences of life. Suppressed feelings and desires. Even though we are not aware of their existence, they exert great influence on our behavior.
Spiritual Coaching can be associated with a specific religion, such as in an Islamic context integrating Islamic philosophy, spirituality, healing supplications, prayer, and meditative practices that are used to enhance psycho-spiritual well-being.
It’s about experiencing faith and internalizing it, it is about shifting perspectives and viewing the world with a greater sense of awareness rather than going through life like a zombie; existing for the sake of existing. But most importantly it is about a journey.
Regardless of the association with a particular faith tradition, we are on this journey moving with time. Every soul is in the continuous movement towards a higher destination whether we are willing to acknowledge it or not. It is inevitable. Sometimes we need a guide, a coach to help us along the journey to overcome spiritual challenges and difficulties. Those who have a deeper level of awareness, spiritual maturity, and the ability to connect and teach others on a spiritual level can guide others.
Spiritual Coaching is for those who are concerned with their spiritual development process. During sessions, you will receive step-by-step guidance to progress and evolve. It is beyond ritualistic and dogmatic practices.
Spiritual Dimension of our existence is the most critical because it leads to spiritual maturity and evolution of the soul.
We exist and operate on multiple dimensions of life such as social-emotional, psycho-spiritual, and physical dimensions without giving a second thought. Most of us are aware of our physical existence and we spend a lot of time taking care of our bodies and physical needs to the extent that we often neglect our spiritual wellbeing (SWB). Sometimes we are aware of changes taking place within our soul, the disturbance, and the turmoil we feel due to stress, anxiety, and life-threatening situations. Societal and environmental influences affect our spiritual and emotional well-being.
Aim of Spiritual Coaching
It helps you analyze your deep-rooted beliefs and assumptions that contribute to the healthy or unhealthy state of mind and perception of God. The aim is to bring lasting transformation by aligning your inner life with external existence and being an authentic self as you interact with others.
How does Spiritual Coaching work?
By helping clients exercise “freedom of choice” in how they think, feel, and wish to live their lives with awareness and purpose. It helps a client break through limiting beliefs, negative assumptions, and other obstacles preventing their spiritual growth.
The advancement at this stage demands transcendence beyond dogma and ritualistic practices. We reach spiritual maturity by progressing through stages of development. Sometimes we need a guide, a coach to help us along the journey. Focusing on the self and understanding our soul on a deeper level gives us the ability to teach others and guide them in the process of spiritual development.
